Religious of Brisbane meet with their Archbishop

The religious of the Archdiocese of Brisbane gathered with Archbishop John Bathersby in St Stephen's Cathedral on Saturday April 5 for a celebration of the Eucharist.

There are 51 congregations in the Archdiocese providing 943 religious.

The booklet for the celebration highlighted the date and place of arrival of each of the congregations.

The Passionists came to Stradbroke Island off the coast of Brisbane in 1843 and began missionary work.

The Sisters of Mercy arrived from Ireland in 1861and the Christian Brothers arrived in the Archdiocese in 1875.

Among the more recent arrivals are the Missionaries of Charity in 1999, the Missionary Sisters of Service in 1996 and the Sisters of St Paul de Chartres in 1989.

Some of the photos taken at the morning tea are a glimpse of the diversity of the nationalities of the religious in the Archdiocese of Brisbane.

The Archbishop warmly thanked the religious for their generous service to the Church by the diversity of their ministries.

He mingled with the religious over morning tea and many took the opportunity to speak with him personally. His own generosity of spirit was reflected in his willingness to remain with his guests until the last one had departed.

For many of the religious it is a happy occasion to renew friendships and exchange memories.
