Gifts beyond Christmas

pathways, December 2009

As the countdown to Christmas continues, pathways offers some suggestions that send love and hope far beyond the Christmas tree.

Religious calendars and diaries

The Josephite calendar promotes both the canonisation cause and increasingly closer relationship between the two families of Josephites in Australia.  The cover features a young Mary hand-in-hand with a young girl and a young boy, with the words, "Towards Canonisation". It also features the emblems of both Josephites -- the Central or "Brown" Josephites based at Mount Street, North Sydney, and the Federation or "Black" Josephites whose congregations around Australia and New Zealand moved out from Perthville, New South Wales.  The calendar can be purchased ONLINE.  Bulk orders should be arranged through the Mary MacKillop Place Gift Shop and Cafe, PO Box 1081, North Sydney, 2059.

The Columban Calendar has been published in Australia for more than 80 years by the St Columbans Mission Society. In that time it has become something of an institution in Australian Catholic homes. The 2010 calendar continues the fine tradition of providing a practical calendar, a liturgical calendar and reproductions of inspiring works of religious art.   Print the ONLINE form and fax to 03 9379 6040, phone 03 9375 9475, email calendar@columban.org.au.  The calendars are also available in many parishes.

The Australian Religious Diary 2010 offers 13 months and covers the full liturgical year (beginning with the First Sunday in Advent, November 29, 2009) and the full calendar year (goes to the beginning of January 2011). Each double page spread offers a week's view.  The diary also features a weekly gospel verse and the response to the psalm for each day, Catholic lectionary details for Sunday and daily liturgical readings as well as Sunday readings from the Common Lectionary; liturgical colours for each Sunday; feasts, holy days and commemorations of the major Christian denominations, Islam and Judaism.

The diary has been published by David Lovall Publishing in association with The Blake Society.  Illustrations throughout the diary are from the 2008 Blake Prize for Religious Art.  The front cover (pictured left) is 'The Garden of Earthly Delights', Nadia Narelle Kleindanze, 148x12x5cm, gouache and acrylic on canvas.

The Good Sams Cookbook:  150 years of perfecting recipes:  For 150 years, the Sisters of the Good Samaritan have been nourishing minds, hearts and bodies. This Australian congregation has stood the test of time, and so have many of the 150 recipes in this book, passed down from one generation of Sisters to the next, and from parents, relatives and friends. This is convent cooking at its best -- from soups, mains and desserts to breads, biscuits, snacks, jams, sauces and drinks -- and comes with lashings of wholesome ingredients and love.

The Sisters take their inspiration from Benedictine spirituality in which meals are an occasion for inclusion, hospitality and celebration, and cooking is an opportunity for loving service and creativity.  In this collection, they offer 150 of their favourite recipes, one for each year of their history. They also include recipes from the other countries in which the Good Sams live -- Japan, the Philippines, and Kiribati.

The Good Sams Cookbook is available from the Art Shop at Polding Villa, Glebe (Sydney).

Senor Pilich - Wartime in Kalumburu:  It is 1943 and the monastery cat Senor Pilich finds himself on the Kalumburu Mission, in the far north of Western Australia.  Filling his days exploring the wilderness and helping the monks build a new monastery, life is pretty good for this cat of superior talent and importance, but the arrival of a mysterious stranger is the first sign of approaching trouble.  This lively tale, Senor Pilich - Wartime in Kalumburu by Benedictine Anscar McPhee,  offers readers of all ages a rare glimpse into life in the remote Kimberley region, and a vivid portrait of the role Kalumburu and its people played during the World War II bombings of northern Australia.

Fr Anscar joined the monastery at New Norcia in 1957 and made his solemn profession as a monk in 1961. In the late 1980s he took on his present position as parish priest at Kalumburu in the Kimberleys.

Senor Pilich - Wartime in Kalumburu is available from the New Norcia Museum & Art Gallery on (08) 9654 8056 or museum@newnorcia.wa.edu.au or download an order form.
