Keeping aboriginal homelands

aboriginalwomanchild150The Conference of Leaders of Religious Institutes in NSW or CLRI(NSW) has released the latest edition of Just in Time, featuring a factsheet on homelands, which are under threat from government legislation that would cease funding essential services to aboriginal communities.

A message to the Australian Government from many Aboriginal Peoples in Australia is powerfully communicated through the video "Treaties".

Elders tell of their 'stolen' experience

Elders150Seven Aboriginal elders separated as children from their parents and placed in dormitories at Cherbourg shared their stories last month with students at Mt Alvernia College, Kedron to mark the anniversary of the Apology to Stolen Generations, a gathering which included visiting Thai Ursuline Sister Somchitr and Murri Ministry’s Sister Kay McPadden rsj.

NAIDOC Week is a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and an opportunity to recognise the contributions of Indigenous Australians. This year’s theme proudly celebrates the 50th anniversary of the presentation of the Bark Petitions of the Yolngu people of Yirrkala to the Federal Parliament. Let us remind ourselves of what is happening for these people today and remember them in our prayer.

Redfern Jarjum College lights the way

Redfern Jarjum College has opened its doors to 24 Aboriginal children who were unable to thrive in the mainstream education system with a program specially designed to accommodate their unique cultural needs.

The CRA Justice Network urges you to take action on the rapidly increasing number of children in the Northern Territory being moved into out-of-home care, which repeats the agonising experience of the Stolen Generation.

Following the support given to the Gove Case, Sr Suzette Clark rsc of the CRA Justice Network urges us to pray for justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.

A Lenten invitation

Ash Wednesday marks the 5th anniversary of the Apology to the Stolen Generations. The Justice Network invites you to celebrate the Apology and begin your Lenten journey by focusing your prayer, fasting and giving of alms on a specific justice issue for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sisters and brothers.

A new book by ‘concerned Australians’ is an important historical record focusing on the Senate Committee Inquiry into the Stronger Futures legislation. It shows how the Government decision-making process chose to ignore the views and ideas expressed by many Aboriginal people of the Northern Territory communities in much the same way as has happened since colonisation. This book will be launched in Sydney on 5 November.

Walking with Indigenous people

A campaign to forge a path to justice for Indigenous people is being launched by Caritas Australia this month. And the inaugural "Walk As One Forum' on 25-26 August 2012 will be of great interest to those working in social justice and development, particularly for those working with Indigenous communities.

Stronger futures or stolen futures?

The Australian Catholic Bishops Conference (ACBC) and Catholic Religious Australia (CRA) call upon all Federal Senators not to pass the legislation of the 'Stronger Futures Northern Territory 2011 Bill'.

The Stronger Futures legislation was rushed through the Lower House of Parliament, and the decision now rests with the Senate. It is expected to be voted on when the Senate resumes on 8 May.
