Progress made on Anglican Roman Catholic Dialogue in Australia

cross candles150Last Friday, the Australian Anglican Roman Catholic Dialogue Group (AUSTARC) launched an Agreed Statement, “Called to Holiness in Australia”.

The Statement says:

“The aim of this shared statement, then, is to encourage the exploration of holiness by Anglicans and Roman Catholics at the parish level. In this way it is hoped that we might not only develop together in our understanding of what a holy person looks like, but also deepen our commitment to holiness as something worth questing for in this moment of our Australian story.”

This work on holiness continues AUSTARC’s work on grappling with what it means to be an Anglican or Roman Catholic Christian living in Australia today and so follows on from its Statements such as “The Challenge of Gospel Authority” (2004) and “Why the Church?” (2007).

The document invites us to ponder that the place to start the quest for holiness is a restlessness for meaning, for a “well lived life” and so be drawn by holiness that, in the Bible, is above all an attribute of God. It goes on to say, “…we are conscious that both
Anglicans and Roman Catholics embrace this unique word, holiness. We share a common commitment to living holy holiness here and now, shaped by our own time and space”.

We hope that this resource will be used especially by Anglicans and Roman Catholics together in parish groups. There are discussion questions at the end of each chapter and several brief stories of Australians that are considered holy people in both our communities.

AUSTARC was established in 1995 by the General Synod of the Anglican Church of Australia and the Australian Roman Catholic Bishops Conference to enable a dialogue between the two communities that could take up and adapt the work of the International Anglican and Roman Catholic Commission (ARCIC) and seek ways of addressing common issues here in our own land.

“Called to Holiness in Australia” can be found at the following website hosted by the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference.
